Product Description
These vaginal suppositories provide a convenient way to re-establish the normal balance of the vaginal microflora. The Lactobacillus acidophilus strain we use has a high attachment ration (bacteria/human epithelial cell) insuring successful colonization of the vagina. Lactobacilli that adhere well to vaginal epithelial cells competitively exclude other bacteria. L. Acidophilus is able to metabolize glycogen to produce lactic acid. This is an important characteristic since the vaginal epithelial cells secrete glycogen and lactic acid is crucial to maintaining an acidic environment, which inhibits other bacteria growth. L. Acidophilus is also able to produce hydrogen peroxides, which inhibits the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Several studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of lactobacilli in returning the vaginal microflora to normal. Lactobacillus has also been found to a safe and effective treatment for bacterial vaginosis in pregnancy
